– Unclothed Echoes

Stage: Development

About the project:

A bare body is a profound canvas, where textures, shapes, marks, and scars each whisper a unique story. Unclothed Echoes delves into these narratives with ten intimate photographs focusing on the area from the navel to the thighs. In each image, the subjects’ hands obscure their genitals—not to conceal but to shift focus, encouraging you to look beyond the superficial and engage with the deeper complexities of the human form.

This project draws inspiration from John Berger’s reflections on nakedness versus nudity, capturing the raw, unfiltered essence of the body while blurring the boundaries of recognition and interpretation. Accompanying the photographs are audio interviews with the subjects and others, sharing honest reflections on nudity and sexuality. These layers provide a multidimensional exploration of personal and societal perceptions of the body.

Unclothed Echoes aspires to foster a more empathetic and nuanced understanding of the body in contemporary discourse. This ongoing project aims to expand its reach by incorporating diverse body types and forms, culminating in a larger exhibition and the publication of a photography book that further examines these intricate themes.

The first solo exhibition was held from January 10 to 22, 2025, at the Goethe-Institut Kigali.

– A Glimpse into the World of Abahizi

Stage: early development

About the project:

This documentary photo project focuses on Abahizi, a traditional music and dance cooperative made up of over 30 members, mostly from historically marginalized groups, living in Cyaruzinge, a village on the outskirts of Kigali, Rwanda. The cooperative uses music and dance to strengthen their community, promote financial autonomy, and pass on Rwandan cultural traditions. The project aims to portray the daily lives and complex traditions of these people, who are deeply connected to the disappearing cultural practices of Rwanda, capturing their lives not through an ethnographical lens, but as a social documentary about a community intertwined with music, dance, and tradition.

The project will also document the rich history of these traditions, including the endangered Amakondera instrumental ensemble, which consists of five types of horns and two drums. This ensemble, believed to have originated during the reign of King Yuhi IV Gahindiro, is significant in preserving Rwanda’s cultural heritage. The cooperative members, often referred to as Abakondera, are part of the guardians of these traditions, despite the economic struggles they face. Through photographs and sound recordings, the project will capture their performances, daily lives, and the profound cultural poetry embedded in their music, aiming to preserve and share these traditions before they fade away under the pressure of modernization.
